John Byers

BYERS, John H. -- Age 85, of Swartz Creek, died August 8, 2015. A Masonic memorial service will be held 11:45 AM under the auspices of F & A.M. Lodge 205 followed by a service at 12:00 PM Thursday, August 20 at Sharp Funeral Homes, Miller Road Chapel, 8138 Miller Rd., Swartz Creek. A committal service will follow at Great Lakes National Cemetery, Holly. Visitation will be held from 11:00 AM until the time of service. Those desiring may make contributions to the Shriners Children's Hospital. John was born June 17, 1930 in Flint. He married Betty Stanke in Angola, Indiana on September 18, 1954. He was a survivor of the Beecher tornado of 1953 and transported other survivors to Hurley by train. He was a Veteran of the U.S. Army serving in the Korean war, receiving 2 Purple Hearts. He was a Railroad Engineer with 30 plus years of service. John was a Mason. He was a Shriner and drove the Tin Lizzies. He owned and operated Dedick's Bar in Owosso for 8 years. He is survived by his wife, Betty of 60 years; 2 children, Randy (Beryl) Woodin of Durand, John D. Byers of Swartz Creek; grandchildren, Kevin Spencer II, Randy Woodin Jr, Shawn Michael Woodin; great grandchildren, Natalie, Nathan, Noah, Felicia; great-great grandchild, Amiah; 3 sisters, Leona, Shirley and Connie. He is preceded in death by his mother, Norma; daughter, Michelle Lynn Byers; grand daughter, Brandy K. Byers; 2 brothers, Kenny and Richard.
