Joan Leveque

LeVEQUE, Joan Kay (Wylie) - age 83, of Linden, died Friday, February 19, 2016. Funeral mass will be celebrated 11 AM Saturday, February 27 at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, 600 N. Adelaide St., Fenton. Fr. Jim Rolph celebrant. Visitation will held 6 PM - 9 PM Friday at Sharp Funeral Homes, Fenton Chapel, 1000 Silver Lake Road, Fenton, and 10 AM - 11 AM Saturday at church. Contributions may be made to Greater Flint Area Sports Hall of Fame, St. Luke N.E.W. Life Center, 3115 Lawndale, Flint, 48504, or the Humane Society. Joan was born July 2, 1932 to John Charles Vivian and Esther Emma Wills in Flint. She attended Dort, Emerson and graduated from Flint Northern in 1950, having been Junior class president and a member of the C.O.F. Joan spent a lifetime ice skating. She entered many skating competitions and gave her talents to many local ice shows before joining the cast of Holiday on Ice as a chorus member. Joan worked her way into feature roles and toured Europe and Mexico with the show. Upon returning from Europe, she toured and starred in Ice Vogues, which toured smaller states, setting up their own ice and bringing the beauty of skating to many states and cities that hadn't seen ice shows before. Upon leaving Holiday on Ice she taught and produced the shows for Alpena Winter Festivals. Her family let Mr. Manley know of her wiliness to teach skating in her own home town. When Ballenger Park was converted into skating, Joan gave lessons and put on ice shows there for over 25 years. Then, the I.M.A. Sports Arena was built and she moved her lessons and shows indoors. After two years, she and her instructors had the largest "Learn to Skate Program" in the USA, being acclaimed by the I.S.I.A., earning many accolades. Joan was the first woman to earn a power skating certificate. She ran many skating programs for hockey at the I.M.A. Joan later moved to Iceland Arena and retired after 30 years of teaching. She was an original member of the Flint Figure Skating Club; a member of Ann Arbor, Windsor, and Hiawatha of Sault St. Marie Skating Clubs; and the Great Flint Sports Hall of Fame, serving a two year period as president and on the Selection Committee. Joan was also a member of the Northern Alumni Association; St. Matthew, St. Luke, and St. Roberts Church; and recently St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, Fenton. Joan married Benjamin J. Wylie at St. Matthew in 1956. Seven children where born of this union: Thomas, Robert, James, Jennie, Michael, Catherine, and Susan; blessed with son and daughters in law, Brenda, Lisa, Alba, and Sandee; grandchildren, Timothy, Amanda, and Jacqueline Wylie, Kamrin and Michael Gold, and Lucas Bergfeld-Wylie. She was married to Bernard Charles LeVeque and leaves behind: Paul, Connie, Sarah, and Claire, Mary and Jim Deitrich, Charles and Megan, Donna and Tom Root, Andrew, Kaitlyn, Mallory, Thomas Chase, David, David John, Alex, Amy, Jeff, and Mason. Joan is also survived by: brother, John (Joanne)Vivian, his children, Vickie, Cheryl, and John Jr. and their children and grandchildren; cousins, James (Phyllis) Wills, Paul (Yvonne) Wills, Tom (Mary) Tippett, and several more; aunt, Irene Flynn Wills; and many friends.
