Joan Garfield

GARFIELD, Joan Stephanie - Age 79, of Fenton Township, died Thursday June 9, 2016. Funeral Mass will be celebrated 11 AM Friday, June 17 at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, 600 N. Adelaide Street, Fenton. Fr. David Harvey celebrant. Burial will follow in St. John Cemetery. Visitation will be held 4-8 PM Thursday at Sharp Funeral Homes, Fenton Chapel, 1000 Silver Lake Road, Fenton and at church Friday from 10 AM until the time of Mass. A scripture service will be held at 7 PM Thursday at the funeral home. Those desiring may make contributions to the Joanie Garfield Memorial Fund for charity. Joanie was born July 29, 1936 in Detroit, the daughter of Frank and Angeline (Kaluzny) Nowinski. She was a graduate of St. Hedwig Catholic High School. Joanie married James S. Garfield Sr. June 23, 1956 in Detroit. She was a resident of Fenton Township for 40 years. Joanie was an X-Ray & Cobalt Therapy Technician, served as a former Fenton Township Treasurer and Trustee for 16 years, and a partner in Jimmie G's Restaurant and the family building business. She was involved in providing scholarships for students of the U of M Performing Arts. Joanie had also purchased and trained K-9 Fang for the Genesee County Sheriff's Department. She was a member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church. Joanie is survived by: loving husband, James Sr.; children, Jeffrey and wife Mary Garfield of Gaylord, Dr. James and wife Linda Garfield of Fenton, June Garfield Ryan of Lake Fenton, and Joan Garfield Cox and husband Charles of Linden; 10 grandchildren; 1 great-grandson; and 2 sisters.
