Jerome “Jerry” Joseph Popilek, age 84, of Swartz Creek, passed away Wednesday, November 27, 2024. Jerry was born January 24, 1940 in Flint, MI, to Joseph and Stella (Smiegel) Popilek.
Jerry joined the Army in 1958 and was honorably discharged 3 years later. While in the service, he met Ruth Ann Salois. They got married July 7, 1962. During their marriage they had three children: Michelle, Mark, and Melissa.
As he helped raise his family, he worked for the United States Post Office for 35 years and worked his way up to Postmaster. He served as Postmaster for the Holly Post Office, and then the Lapeer Post Office for close to a decade.
Jerry was the gentlest, kindest, sweetest man with the best sense of humor. He would do anything for anyone at any time. He loved music. His favorites included Jay & The Americans, the BeeGees, Toby Keith, and Neil Diamond. He loved to read, especially books about espionage and war.
He was blessed with five grandchildren: Annie, Mark, Stephanie, Alex & Jordan. He also had 6 great-grandchildren: Hayden, Emilia, Colton, Liam, William, Evelyn, and a baby girl on the way.
He is survived by his wife, Ruth Ann. His children: Michelle, Mark (Margaret), and Melissa (Rick). Sisters: Marilyn, Kathy, Cheri, and brother Mike. He is preceded in death by his parents, his sisters Irene and Stephanie, and many other loved ones.
A private dinner will be held at a later date to celebrate Jerry’s life. Arrangements were entrusted to Sharp Funeral Homes, Miller Road Chapel, 8138 Miller Road, Swartz Creek.
