Jane Tate

TATE, Jane Elizabeth - Age 89, of Fenton, died Thursday, February 2, 2017 in Nashville, TN. Funeral services will be held 10:30 AM Saturday February 18, 2017 at Sharp Funeral Homes, Fenton Chapel, 1000 Silver Lake Road, Fenton. Burial in Roseland Park Cemetery, Berkley. Visitation will be held at the funeral home Friday from 4-8 PM and 9:30 AM Saturday until the time of the service. Those desiring may make contributions to the Fran Anderson Michigan PTA Scholarship Fund, donation may also be made online at http://www.michiganpta.org/page/scholarship Mrs. Tate was born July 31, 1927 in Detroit, the daughter of James and Caroline (Kirby) Barry. She was a graduate of Redford High School. Mrs. Tate received her Master's Degree in Social Work from Wayne State University and worked in the Detroit Public Schools as a social worker until her retirement in 1999. She was the Legislative Liaison for the Michigan Association of School Social Workers. She also served as the president of the Michigan PTA from 1969-1971. Mrs. Tate was a tireless advocate for students and public education and ran two successful millage campaigns for the Detroit Public Schools. She was a co-Chairperson of PRO-Detroit and member and active participant in many such organizations. She was also a candidate in the 1968 Democratic primary for the Michigan state house of representatives18th District. Surviving are: her children, Michael and wife Nicole Tate of Linden, Walter and wife Nancy Tate of Linden, and Jane and husband Joseph Dziurgot of Nashville, TN; 5 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren; sister, Carol and husband Robert Leary of Traverse City; and several nieces and nephews.
