SMITH, James Edwin -- Age 86, of Flint Township, died Tuesday, August 14, 2007 at his daughter Jane's home. Funeral Mass will be celebrated 11 AM Saturday, August 18 at St. John Vianney Catholic Church, 2415 Bagley St., Flint, Fr. Thomas Firestone celebrant. Visitation will be 2-4 and 6-9 PM Friday at Sharp Funeral Homes, Miller Road Chapel, 8138 Miller Rd., Swartz Creek, where a Rosary will be prayed at 7 PM. Family and friends may gather at the church from 10 AM until the time of the Mass on Saturday. Those desiring may make contributions to St. John Vianney Catholic Church or Brians House Hospice. Mr. Smith was born July 23, 1921 in Bernie, MO, the son of Samuel David and Minnie Melvina (Glass) Smith. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving in WWII under General Patton. He married Helene Westhoff on November 23, 1973 in Flint.  He was a brick mason by trade. Mr. Smith was an active member of St. John Vianney Catholic Church and the D.A.V. of Burton. Surviving are: wife Helene; two daughters Jane and husband Web Pittman of Swartz Creek, Jackie and husband Craig Damon of Flint; grandchildren, Jim, Jill, Kristi, and Tony; great-grandchildren, Leah, Ethan; one sister, Nelda Parker of Alabama; numerous nieces, nephews, grand-nieces, grand-nephews, and good friends, especially Fr. Douglas Osborn, Sister Eileen, Sister Carmen, and Sister Janice. He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister; brothers; and daughter, Sharon Gilliam.
