Helen G. Millhouse, 96, passed away peacefully on Monday, January 2, 2023. She moved through life with grace, a loving spirit, and a sharp wit. Helen was born in Great Falls, Montana to Leo C. and Atta Graybill. She attended Great Falls Central High School. An avid horse rider, her youth was full of good friendships, and love and support from her family.
After spending her freshman year at Lindenwood College in Missouri, she transferred to Northwestern University where she thrived academically and socially, graduating with a degree in Business Psychology. After graduation, Helen moved with a sorority sister to Flint, where she worked at the AC Spark Plug Company and where she met Clifford J. (Jack) Millhouse. They were married in Great Falls, MT in 1949, and enjoyed a 30-year marriage.
Helen credited her parents for instilling in her a strong commitment to community engagement and philanthropy, and she spent her life helping a variety of organizations in Flint and Genesee County, especially those supporting women. Over the years she served on the board of the Founders Society of the Flint Institute of Arts, the Junior League of Flint, and the Friends of Flint Youth Theatre. She also served as president of the YWCA Greater Flint, Women’s Association of the Flint Institute of Music, Cedar Street Children’s Center, and a Chapter of the Needlework Guild of America. Helen was also a member of P.E.O., an international organization helping women advance through education, and the First Presbyterian Church of Flint.
An enthusiastic athlete, Helen enjoyed tennis, downhill and cross-county skiing, and playing golf as a member of the Flint Golf Club. While married to Jack, they traveled extensively throughout the U.S. and internationally. She especially loved Spain and Portugal. Having grown up in Montana, Glacier National Park always held a special place in her heart.
Helen will be missed most for her beaming smile and twinkle in her eye. She is survived by her three children, Marcia Beach, Susan Millhouse, and David Millhouse (Donna); her three grandchildren, Amanda Millhouse (Lawrence Scott), Daniel Millhouse, and Alena Hauser; her great grandchild, Alyson Millhouse; and nephews, Turner, Ben and Daniel Graybill. She was preceded in death by her parents and brother, Leo C. Graybill Jr.
Helen’s family is most grateful to her caregiving team at Springvale Assisted Living and CorsoCare Hospice for their wonderful, attentive care during Helen’s final months.
A private family service will be held. Tributes may be shared at www.sharpfuneralhomes.com. Contributions can be made to the YWCA Greater Flint.
