LEECH, Harriet "Jay" - age 84, a long time resident of Durand, died Saturday, May 16, 2015, at her home. Jay was born in Eagle Grove, Iowa, on March 10, 1931, the daughter of the late Donald Ivan and Helen Lavera (Knight) Downing. She was a gifted writer and authored or co-authored 5 books including How to Care for Your Horse and Bright Fawn and Me. She was a passionate volunteer and dispatched for 20 years at the Durand Vernon Ambulance. She enjoyed travel, raising and showing horses on their farm and conversing with her wonderful neighbors, friends and relatives. She was predeceased by her husband, Walter, and her brother, Donald Downing. She is survived by daughters, Stephanee Leech and Laurie Clawson; granddaughters, Sal Spanier (Shane), and Blair Finney; and by her great granddaughter, Shay Linae Spanier, who was the twinkle in her eye. She leaves friends and beloved family members to cherish her memory. Memorial contributions can be made to the Shiawassee County Humane Society or charity of your choice. No service will be held.
