Gladys Lorraine Merkle

Gladys Lorriane Merkle, age 86, a shining beacon of warmth and kindness, passed away peacefully on Thursday, November 14, 2024, at Safe Haven Assisted Living in Okemos, Michigan. A funeral service will take place 1:00 PM, Friday, November 22, 2024 at Sharp Funeral Homes, Miller Road Chapel 8138 Miller Road, Swartz Creek. Visitation will take place prior to the funeral starting at 11:00 AM. In lieu of flowers, those desiring may direct memorial contributions to the Alzheimer's Association.

Gladys was born on February 26, 1938, in Swartz Creek on the family farm, to the late George and Orilla (Muchler) Dart. For over 30 years, Gladys worked diligently as a Certified Nursing Aide for Riverview Nursing Home, where her compassionate spirit touched the lives of countless residents. She also lent her talents to McArthur Insurance Agency, contributing to her community in way that reflected her dedication and strong work ethic. A graduate of Swartz Creek Schools, class of 1956, Gladys was proud of her roots and the values her upbringing instilled in her. Gladys and Jerry Merkle were united in marriage on October 27, 1962 in Swartz Creek. 

Known for her fiery personality, Gladys was outgoing and supremely caring, always ready with a smile or a helping hand. She cherished the company of her family, finding immeasurable joy in their laughter and love. Her passions included gardening and soaking up the sun with a cup of coffee on bright, sunny days, where she could sit outside and reflect on the beauty of life. Gladys' positivity was infectious, encouraging those around her to adopt a similar outlook.

Gladys is survived by her loving husband, Jerry Merkle; her devoted daughter, Bethany (Eric) Bullion; and her daughter-in-law, Jean Merkle. She leaves behind her beloved stepchildren, Jerry Merkle Jr., Laura Skidmore, and Cathy Revere, along with 11 grandchildren and many great-grandchildren, whose lives she enriched with her unwavering love. She is also survived by her cherished siblings, Harold (Wanda) Dart and Kenny (Norajane) Dart; sisters-in-law, Pam Dart and Carole Dart; and a wealth of nieces and nephews who will miss her dearly.
