Gerald Joseph Bila, age 80, of Swartz Creek, passed away in his home on Thursday, October 29th, 2020. Funeral services will be held 2 PM Wednesday, November 4th, 2020. Visitation will be held from 12 PM until the time of service.
Jerry was born March 2nd, 1940, in Chesaning, the son of Joseph F. and Alice V. (Kalisek) Bila.
After graduation from high school at Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Chesaning, Jerry married Berneice Henige (Loeblein) and together they welcomed two children; daughter, Dana and son, James.
In 1958, Jerry began his 38-year career at Chevrolet Flint Manufacturing, “Chevy in the Hole.” Soon after, he completed his apprenticeship and worked as a journeyman millwright across the multi-plant site that once employed over 2,500 skilled tradesmen. Within a short time, Jerry took on UAW leadership positions when first elected Committeeman and then as District Shop Committeeman. In 1978 he was then elected for two consecutive three-year terms as UAW Local 659 Vice President and in 1984 transitioned to the role of President. Upon leaving office and prior to his retirement in 1996, Jerry continued to serve his co-workers as an appointed member of the Joint Health and Safety Team.
On August 26th, 1995, Jerry married Patricia (Miller) Danek and together they shared 25 cherished years with family and friends. With homes in both Swartz Creek and Zephyrhills, FL., in retirement, Jerry enjoyed hunting, following his favorite sports teams, and as an avid golfer, organized and played in many outings.
He is survived by his wife, Patricia; daughter, Dana (Rick) Thackham; son, James (Julie) Bila; grandchildren, Matt Ferry, Hughston and Hunter Thackham; great-grandchildren, Ava and James Ferry; stepsons, Michael Danek and Douglas (Eva Kusk) Danek; step-granddaughter, Crystal (Bob) Garza; step great-grandchildren, Brooke and Waylon; sister, Joyce Foy. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Fred.
