PIESKO, Gerald E., D.O. - age 70, of Flushing, passed away Tuesday, July 20, 2010 at Hurley Medical Center. A mass of Christian burial will be celebrated 10:30 Saturday, July 24, 2010 at St. John Vianney Catholic Church, 2415 Bagley St., Flint with Rev. Fr. Paul Schwermer celebrant. Interment will follow at Sunset Hills Cemetery. Visitation will be 5-9 PM Thursday and 2-5 and 6-9 PM Friday at Sharp Funeral Homes, Miller Road Chapel, 8138 Miller Rd., Swartz Creek where a rosary will be prayed at 7 PM Friday. In lieu of flowers, those desiring may make memorial contributions to Powers Catholic High School or the charity of their choice. Dr. Piesko was born June 13, 1940 in Saginaw, the son of Edward and Helen (Sugar) Piesko. He was a 1958 graduate of Flint Northern High School. He received a Bachelor of Science from University of Michigan in 1962 and his Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine from Kirkville College of Osteopathic Medicine and Surgery in 1966. Dr. Piesko served his internship in 1967 at Flint Osteopathic Hospital. He served as a Captain in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War as a Battalion Surgeon. He was Board Certified in Sports Medicine and Family Practice by the American Osteopathic Academy of Sports Medicine and Family Physicians. Dr. Piesko served as the Chief of Staff from 1974 - 1977 and as a Trustee from 1982 - 1986 at Flint Osteopathic Hospital. He has been an Associate Clinical Professor at Michigan State University since 1980, he was the Team Physician for the Flint Generals Hockey Club from 1991 - 2000 and was a partner and past president of the Flint Spirits, the Team Physician for Powers Catholic High School since 1982, served as the President from 1996-1998 and Board of Directors from 1988-1996 for the American Osteopathic Academy of Sports Medicine. Dr. Piesko was instrumental in establishing the standards and residency program for Board Certification in Sports Medicine. Dr. Piesko has served on the Health Plus of Michigan Board of Directors since 1986 where he was presently Chairman of the Board and Chairman of Medical Affairs Committee. Dr. Piesko is the director and owner of Flushing Medical Center, Greater Flint Sports Medicine Center. Additionally, he served on the staff at Genesee Memorial Hospital, St. Joseph Campus, Flint Osteopathic Campus and Genesys Regional Medical Center. He received the Bruin Club Award in 1990 and was inducted into Flint Powers Sports Club Hall of Fame in 1996 and Greater Flint Sports Hall of Fame in 1998. Surviving are: wife, Carol; three children, Jeannie and Dr. John Commet of Flushing, Gerald Piesko, Jr. of Linden, Michelle and Mark Newman of Flushing; five grandchildren, Alicia, Matthew, Jason, Lauren, and Gabriel; mother Helen Piesko of Swartz Creek; sister, Donna and Richard Burris of Swartz Creek. His father, Edward Piesko preceded him in death. The family extends a special thank you to the nurses and physicians of Hurley Medical Center ICU and Rhonda White for their loving care and support.
