George Hubbard Burroughs

February 28, 1914 — May 18, 2005

BURROUGHS, George Hubbard - Age 91, of Flint, died at his residence on May 18, 2005. Funeral services will be held 11 AM Saturday, May 21, 2005 at Sharp Funeral Home & Cremation Center, 6063 Fenton Rd., Flint. Interment will follow in the Burroughs Family Plot at Glenwood Cemetery. Visitation will be held 2-5 & 6-8 PM Friday at the funeral home. George was born February 28, 1914 in Flint the third child of J.E. and Louise Hubbard Burroughs. He graduated from The Taft School in 1933 and The University of Southern California in 1937. He was captain of the Southern Cal. Tennis Team. He studied philosophy at Exeter College, Oxford University in England, in 1938. After college, he sold sporting goods for Hubbard's Hardware in Flint. During WWII, Mr. Burroughs served as a Captain in the U.S. Army artillery and after D-Day as a liaison officer with the Belgium Army. Following WWII, he became a dairy farmer and prominent land developer in Genesee County. Mr. Burroughs was an active civic leader who served as Past President and Past Board Member of Planned Parenthood, Past President and Past Board Member of The Big Brothers of Greater Flint and Past President and Past Board Member of The International Institute. He was a Flint Rotarian and was the Flint City Tennis Champion. An avid sportsman, he supported numerous wildlife conservation organizations including, The Ruffed Grouse Society, Trout Unlimited, The Federation of Fly Fishers and Ducks Unlimited. At age 89, he was a leading figure in organizing Woodcock Limited. Burroughs was also the founder of the Flint chapter of the Sierra Club. George and his wife Betty were active duplicate bridge players both in Flint and South Carolina. Surviving are his wife, Betty Burroughs of Flint; children, Joanne Scarbrough and husband Ted of Arvada, CO, Joseph Burroughs and wife Kathryn of Flint, Susan Fauth Cross and husband George of Grand Blanc, Carl Chapell and wife Penny of Evergreen, CO, Dean Anderson and wife Carol of Traverse City, Mick Thompson and wife Betty of Swartz Creek, Suzanne Starrs and husband Pat of Linden; nieces, Ann Burroughs of Grand Rapids, Mary Young and husband Brig of Aspen, CO; three nephews, Sam Stewart and wife Nancy of Lake Leelanau, MI, Doug Stewart and wife Carol of Manchester, VT, Jon Burroughs and wife Barbara of Fenton; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. George was preceded in death by his parents; brother, James R. Burroughs; sister, Louise Stewart. The family wishes to extend a special thank you to Heartland Hospice.
