EVANOFF, Frank A. - age 96, of Flint, died Thursday, June 4, 2009 at the Pines of Lake Fenton. Services will be held 1 PM Tuesday, June 9, 2009 at St. Nicholas Orthodox Church, 2143 S. Center Rd., Burton with Rev. Matthew Peter Butrie officiating. Interment will follow at Sunset Hills Cemetery. Visitation will be held 2-5 and 6-8 PM Monday at Sharp Funeral Home & Cremation Center, 6063 Fenton Rd., Flint where a Parastisis service will be held 7 PM. Those desiring may make memorial contributions to the Humane Society of Genesee County or St. Nicholas Orthodox Church. Frank was born November 6, 1912 in Tetevo, Macedonia, the son of Kosta and Lenka (Martinoff) Evanoff and immigrated to the United States through Ellis Island in 1922. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving during World War II with the British Royal Air Force in Egypt and Northern Africa. Frank received a bachelor degree from Michigan Normal College (Eastern Michigan) and his master's degree from the University of Michigan. He was a member of Kappa Phi Alpha fraternity since 1935. He first started teaching in the Atherton School District and then taught for Flint Public Schools at McKinley Junior High School for 39 years retiring in 1983 and never missed a day of school. Frank was the sports writer for the Michigan Normal College newspaper and later for the Flint Journal column "Sports by Fritz". He was an avid bowler, golfer and an active participant in with Michigan Citizens for Peace for the last seven years. Frank founded the Frank Evanoff Chevy V8 Bowling League in 1947 and never missed a night of bowling on any league. Surviving are: nieces and nephews, Connie (David) Knaggs, Michael B. (Ani) Evanoff, Stephanie (William) Fohey, Barbara (Andrew) Martinez, Mary Ann (Joseph) Gisewhite, John (Patricia Gidday) Evanoff; cousins, Rosemary, James and Mickey Martinoff; many grand nieces and grandnephews. He was preceded in death by: his parents, brothers, Michael and Dr. Stephen Evanoff; sister-in-law, Phyllis Evanoff; niece, Jo Ann Evanoff and special friend, Iola Werkheiser.
