Eva was born March 13, 1932, in Clio, Michigan. She grew up on her family farm where she learned the work ethic that would shape her entire life. She graduated from Clio High School, class of 1950, and then continued her education at Central Michigan University, graduating in 1954 with a teaching degree. She married Nelson “Bud” Curtis on August 18, 1956 and they shared a wonderful life together. They loved spending time with family and traveled extensively until his passing in January 2003. She retired from Fenton Schools in 1995 after a 35-year teaching career, most of which was spent teaching first grade.
A lifelong United Methodist, she asked Christ to be the Lord of her life in her teens. Her faith shaped her and serving God was a central part of her life. She faithfully served her church in several capacities as a youth group leader, in United Methodist Women, at Midwest Missions, and on the Administrative Board. At the district level, she was on the Missions board for many years. She and Bud were part of the Nomad organization in which they traveled to natural disaster areas to help people rebuild their lives. She was also a hospice volunteer for the first hospice in Genesee County.
Bud and Eva were known for their annual Fenton Homecoming Coney Dog open house, and their annual Christmas Eve open house. Many people enjoyed Mom’s gift of hospitality over the years. After Bud’s passing, she continued her busy lifestyle loving to watch her grandchildren’s sporting events, spending family time at the Lake Ann cottage, and playing cards and dominoes with her family and friends. Mom was also a well-known cook specializing in comfort food. Her chocolate chip cookies, dill pickles, mallow bars, and apple pies were loved by many! Our Mom was so busy we had to schedule visits well in advance! Eva has been involved with several organizations besides her church involvement: AAUW, Nomads, Fenton Lions Club, and the Fenton Education Association.
Eva was predeceased by her parents, Floyd and Olga Crawford, her husband Bud, and her brother-in-law Daniel Cotcher. She is survived by her sons Paul (Rachel) Curtis of Rockford, MI and Scott Curtis of St. Louis, MO; seven grandchildren, Matthew (Evy) Curtis, Ryan Curtis, Lauren Curtis, Nate Curtis, Sam Curtis, Tatianna Curtis, and Eve Trudeau-Curtis. Also surviving are her beloved siblings, Ellen Cotcher and Harlow (Sally) Crawford; brothers-in-law Ed Wegner, and Butch (Bette) Curtis; along with many nieces and nephews. Eva also had several special friends, Beverly Furno, Jerry and Joan Graham, Jennifer Chanter, and Martha Rowan.
The family would like to thank the staff at Provision Living, and the Ascension Genesys ICU nurses, doctors and staff, for their compassionate and loving care during Mom’s illness. In lieu of flowers, Eva asked for contributions be made to the Fenton United Methodist Church.
Mom has received her eternal reward. We all believe she heard the words, “Well Done Eva, My Good and Faithful Servant”. 2nd Timothy 4:7 says “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith”. Eva certainly did!
