SCHUPBACH, Elmer Jacob - Age 89, of Byron/Fenton, died Tuesday, August 4, 2015 at Genesys Health Park. Funeral services will be held 2 PM Friday, August 7, 2015 at Sharp Funeral Homes, Fenton Chapel, 1000 W. Silver Lake Rd., Fenton with Pastor Jacob Ouellette officiating. Visitation will be held 1-9 PM Thursday at the funeral home where a VFW memorial service will be held at 7 PM. Interment services will held 11:30 AM Tuesday, August 11, 2015 at Great Lakes National Cemetery, Holly. Those desiring may make memorial contributions to the Nash Schupbach Memorial Fund. Elmer was born September 2, 1925 in Wayne County, the son of Harold J. and Morilla (McIntyre) Schupbach. He was a graduate of Fenton High School and had resided in the Fenton area most of his life. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and a member of the 555th Anti-Aircraft Battalion. He served during World War II in the European Theatre attached to the 104th Infantry with 195 days of front line combat in France, Belgium, Holland and Germany. On 34 occasions he furnished direct support for the infantry and shot down 22 German planes, defended against 27 enemy bombing runs, crossed the Rhine at Remagen on Ludendorff bridge. He received the European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign ribbons and two bronze stars. After the war, he attended art school in Detroit. Mr. Schupbach married Joyce Marie McMichael in 1951 and she preceded him in death on January 9, 2004. He was a self-employed Mason Contractor most of his life. Surviving are: five children, Greg (Peggy) Schupbach of Fenton, Laura Ouellette of Denver, Steven "Ernie" (Laurie) Schupbach of Fenton, Shelly Schupbach of Fenton, Layne (Michael) Zack of Fenton; daughter-in-law, Ilene Schupbach; 14 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Melvin (Marilyn) Schupbach, Maynard (Cassie) Schupbach, all of Fenton; two sisters, Marcia (William) Freeman of Linden, Linda Schupbach of Quanicassee; two sisters-in-law, Donna Shue of Linden, Diane Sovis of Fenton; several nieces and nephews, special family friend, Maryann McConnell. He was preceded in death by: his wife, Joyce; four brothers, Fenton, Harold, Curt and Donald; sister, Marian Harris; brother-in-law, Harry Harris; sisters-in-law, Lillian Schupbach and Mary Schupbach; great-grandson, Nash Schupbach.
