Edward A. SAND, JR.

April 6, 1923 — August 23, 2010

SAND, Jr., Edward A. "Sandy" age 87, died August 23, 2010 in Los Gatos, California. A Service and Military Honors will be held 1:30 PM Tuesday, September 7, 2010 at Great Lakes National Cemetery, 4200 Belford Road, Holly, Deacon Ron Kenney officiating. Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association. Edward was born in Detroit on April 6, 1923 to Edward A. and Wanda Sand. He lived most of his life in Flint. Edward and his family resided on 9th Street and attended St. Matthew's. During WWII, Ed served as a B24 tail gunner in the Army Air Corps and received the Distinguished Flying Cross for his participation in the Ploesti Raid. Upon return from the war, Ed married Constance Jane Klyer; they lived in Davison and Flint with their children attending Saint John Vianney and Central High Schools. Ed worked for General Motors, Chevrolet Manufacturing as a Tool and Die Maker. Upon retirement, he volunteered at the Sloan Museum, hand machining parts to restore vintage vehicles. Ed was a lifetime member of The Knights of Columbus, Council 4090, Davison, MI. Ed was predeceased by his parents; wife, Connie, his two sons Christopher and Jonathan and his long time friend Lucille Bailey. Ed is survived by his children Edward A. Sand, III of Denver, Mary Jane Headrick (Gary) of Memphis, TN; Victoria Sand McPeek of Owosso, MI; Gretchen Sand (Bruce Preville) of Los Gatos, CA. He is also survived by his siblings: Mary Dixon, Charles Sand, Frances Mann and Susan Abrams. Ed has 10 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren. Ed moved to California in 2001 where he enjoyed long walks in the sun, the mountains and the beautiful gardens. Over time as Alzheimer's made it increasingly impossible for Ed to live independently, he was cared for by Gretchen, Bruce and a team of compassionate caregivers at Cedar Creek in Los Gatos.
