HOORT, Edward J. - Age 70, of Montrose, died Tuesday, February 23, 2021. Per Edward's request cremation has taken place and no services will be held. Those desiring may make contributions to their local Humane Society. Edward was born October 1, 1950 in Flint, the son of Lewis and Virginia Marie (Herrguth) Hoort. He was a 1968 graduate of Flint Central High School, a 1972 graduate of the University of Michigan-Flint and received his Juris Doctorate Degree from Detroit School of Law. He was an Attorney and Executive Director of Legal Services of Eastern Michigan and the Center for Civil Justice. He was a member of the Michigan Bar Association. Ed was also an Adjunct Professor for the University of Michigan Horace H. Rackham School of Graduate Studies of Public Administration. Ed’s professional life was dedicated to public interest law. He used his skills to help those who could not afford legal representation. His goal was always to fight for those who were unable to fight for themselves, whether they were victims of poverty or suffered from discrimination. He did this through individual representation, class action lawsuits, community work, and efforts to impact changes in public policy. Edward enjoyed scuba diving, reading, traveling, photography and collecting Inuit art. Ed also loved theatre, from his acting days in college to attending theatre performances. Ed had attended performances of all of Shakespeare’s plays. Ed loved to cook (his friends dubbed him "Chef Ed"). Preparing special meals for his friends was Ed’s way of showing how much he cared for them. Ed appreciated, and never took for granted the beauty in nature and its creatures. He loved animals and always shared his life with his pets, especially his dogs. In recent years his dogs were all rescues, and he enjoyed making a home for them; they were his family. Surviving are: his siblings, Patricia Johnson of Kenosha, WI, Lewis Hoort (Sherry) of Tulsa, OK, and Richard Hoort (Sheron) of Casa Grande, AZ; nieces and nephews: Kristen Conroy (Ryan), Jeffrey Hoort (Laurie), Eric Hoort, and Brian Hoort (Jill) as well as many cousins; his four legged companions, Zephyr, Stravinsky, Sabrina, and Brave; special friends, Nate Banks, Ellen Hoekstra, Teresa Trantham, Vivian and Larry VanNorwick, Mike Zelley and several other friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; and his best friend, Jimmy Mandeville. Tributes may be shared at www.sharpfuneralhomes.com.
