LONG, Earl Frederick - Of Chelsea, age 88, died Friday, August 14, 2009. Earl was born in 1920 in Bay City, MI. Mr. Long was a graduate of St. Michael's High School in Pontiac, MI, where he played varsity baseball and football and began a lifelong interest in golf. He was preceded in death, in 2005, by his wife of 62 years, Bernice. Father of James Frederick (Miriam) Long, Mark Earl Long and Sheree Lynn McConville. Survivied by his sister, Ellen Behrens of Lowden, IA. Also survived by nine grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Mr. Long began a Navy career in 1942 and served throughout the South Pacific during World War II, completing his service upon retirement from NAS Grosse Ile, MI in 1962 as a Petty Officer First Class. Mr. Long then worked in Dynamometer Operations for Ford Motor Company in Dearborn, MI until his reitrement from Ford in 1977. In retirement, Mr. Long pursued and refined his ability to create collector-grade miniature furniture. His nationally recognized furniture was purchased and is displayed in many collections across the United States. In addition to his furniture making later in life, Mr. Long greatly enjoyed reading novels, watching classic movies and debating politics. The family will receive friends at Sharp Funeral Homes, Fenton Chapel, 1000 Silver Lake Rd., Fenton from 2-8PM Thursday and 10-11AM Friday.
