REID, Dr. John H., age 85, of Fenton Twp., passed away Monday, June 22, 2009 at Genesys Health Park. As a father and pediatrician, John cradled a generation of babies into adulthood. Today, our Lord, through the loving name of His Son, Jesus Christ, has received, lifted up and cradles John Harris Reid in His loving arms. Dr. Reid was born April 6, 1924 in Goodrich the son of the late Wells Cook Reid, M.D. and Mary Harris Reid. He married Helen Anne Dillman July 19, 1950 in Houghton, Michigan. They moved to Flint in 1953 and to Fenton in 1986. Dr. Reid attended Goodrich High School where he played football and graduated in 1942. Dr. Reid served in the U.S. Navy as a Machinist's Mate 1st Class during WWII.~ In the Pacific theater he manned landing craft on the USS Alcyone and participated with invasions in the Marshal Islands, Leyte Gulf, Saipan and Guam. After the war Dr. Reid attended U of M and graduated from the University of Michigan Medical School. Dr. Reid spent his entire 40 year career serving the Flint community as a pediatrician, retiring in 1994. Dr. Reid served on the American Academy of Pediatrics, Michigan Academy of Pediatrics, Genesee County Medical Society, Michigan State Medical Society and the American Medical Association. He was active in the Genesee Valley Rotary Club and was recognized as a Paul Harris Fellow. Dr. Reid was a member of Court Street United Methodist Church and was active with the church Boy Scout Troop and Men's Club.~ Dr. Reid brought the "Reach Out and Read Program" to Genesee County, a volunteer organization that encourages physicians to "prescribe" books to the children they treat. He also participated on several medical mission trips to Honduras. After retirement, Dr. Reid took glider pilot lessons and was an active member of the Vultures Soaring Club and the American Soaring Society. Dr. Reid was a caring and loving husband, father and grandfather. Dr. Reid's hobbies included growing beautiful roses, wild flower photography and building model airplanes. Throughout his life he was an avid reader and enjoyed trout fishing on the Rifle River as well as sailing and water skiing. In recent years he enjoyed providing pontoon boat rides to friends and family. Surviving are his 3 children, Barbara Ann Reid of San Mateo, CA, James D. Reid and wife, Cynthia of Woodberry Forest, VA, Rosemary E. Lutz and husband Rob of Flushing; 2 grandchildren, John Leighton Reid and Elizabeth W. Reid; 2 sisters, Helen Weaver of Worland, WY, Isabel Rossman of Lakeview, MI. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Helen in 2003; sister, Frances Reid; 2 brother-in-laws, Perry Rossman and Dee Weaver. Funeral Services will be 12:00 PM Saturday, June 27, 2009 at Court St. United Methodist Church, 225 W. Court St., Flint. Rev. Robert D. Wright officiating. Cremation will follow the service. Visitation will be 2-4 and 6-9PM Friday at Sharp Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 6063 Fenton Rd., Grand Blanc Twp. On Saturday, Dr. Reid will be transferred to the church to lie in state from 11AM until service time.
