SCHAEFER, Dr. Richard K. (M.D.) - Age 82, of Orlando, Florida, formerly of Fenton, died Friday, February 2, 2007 at his residence in Florida. Funeral services will be held 11 AM Wednesday, February 7 at Sharp Funeral Homes, Fenton Chapel, 1000 Silver Lake Rd., Fenton, followed by honors under the auspices of V.F.W. Curtis Wolverton Post 3243 of Fenton. Visitation will be held 5-8 PM Monday, 1-3 and 5-8 PM Tuesday at the funeral home. Interment will be in Sunset Hills Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, those desiring may make contributions to the Salvation Army. Richard, the son of Elizabeth R. (Harwood) and Harold K. Schaefer, was born in Bloomington, IL September 20, 1924. The family moved to Flint, then to Fenton in 1939. Dick graduated from Fenton High School in June 1942. He was a 40 year resident of Case's Island. In March of 1943, he joined the US Army Infantry serving in France, Germany and Chechoslovakia. He re-entered college in June 1946 and studied pre-med until June 1947. He married Phyllis E. Kelley July 1947 and finished college in 1949. He worked in the family business, Schaefer Office Supply, when he entered U of M in Ann Arbor to complete pre-medical courses. He graduated from Medical School at U of M in 1959. Dick served on the Board of Director's for the Fenton Kiawanis, JC's and Village Council. He was past President of the Optimist Club, past President of the Fenton Board of Education, past President of Spring Meadows Country Club and National Ski Patrol. He was an avid flyer, with an IFR rating, owning his own Cessna. He was an avid golfer. He opened a private practice in Fenton after graduation, and then went to work at GM in 1966, becoming the Medical Director of V-8 and Metal Fab for Chevrolet in 1974. He also worked as an Emergency Room Physician at McLaren Hospital and St. Joseph Hospital. Dick married Maureen Daly in 1980 and they retired to Florida in 1986. He leaves to cherish his memories, his wife, Maureen; 2 sons, Richard (Maggie), Mike (Cheryl), and their mother, Phyllis; 2 grandchildren, Erica and Rich; brother, Jack (Leila); several nieces and nephews.
