Dr. Attarian

ATTARIAN, Dr. Archie B., D.O., of Grand Blanc, Michigan, was born on December 24, 1928 in Brooklyn, New York. He died on May 3, 2019 in Vienna, Virginia. His parents, Armenian immigrants, were Bedros (Peter) Attarian and Sarah Mooradian. Sarah was an 11-year old survivor of the 1915 Armenian genocide in Turkey. Dr. Attarian graduated from East New York Vocational High School where he was an Honors student, in addition to being league champion in the mile. He attended St. Francis College in Brooklyn on an athletic scholarship and New York University, prior to graduating from Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine in 1954. Dr. Attarian spent the majority of his professional career at Flint Osteopathic Hospital as an anesthesiologist. As director of the residency program, he assisted in the training of over 50 anesthesiologists. Dr. Attarian was an Emeritus member of Genesys Regional Medical Center and Associate Clinical Professor at Michigan State University. Dr. Attarian was also a lifetime professional member of the American Osteopathic Association, Michigan Osteopathic Association, American Medical Association, and Michigan Association of Osteopathic Physicians and Surgeons. He was also a Fellow of the American College of Osteopathic Anesthesiologists. After an outstanding high school and college athletic career in middle distance running, Dr. Attarian resumed running at 38. Until his 82nd year, he ran many competitive races, including over 30 marathons with a personal best time of 2 hours, 53 minutes. Archie also engaged in fishing and golf with his best friend, Dr. Harold Mallon, and his children, playing countless rounds at Warwick Hills Golf and Country Club. He was a devoted poker player, with an evolving group of friends for 56 years. He attended nearly every Michigan State football home game since 1965. He initially became a Spartan fan because from Flint, East Lansing was an easier exit off the expressway than Ann Arbor. Dr. Attarian and his beloved wife, Patricia, enjoyed traveling, and especially cruises and other family vacations with their children and grandchildren. Archie is survived by his son, Archie P. (Ginger) and grandchildren, Peter Hagop and Theodore "Teddy" of Arlington, Virginia, and his daughter, Teresa (Edward McGinnis) and grandchildren, Christopher, Ryan, and Taylor of Vienna, Virginia. He was preceded in death by his wife, Patricia Pearl, his son, Michael Aram, his parents, Bedros and Sarah, his brother, Theodore, and his sister, Martha Tabacco. Dr. Attarian was the last of the first generation males of the Attarian-Mooradian family. Archie was always very active in his community, supporting Michigan State University, Mott Community College, and many charitable organizations, especially Food Bank of Eastern Michigan, Salvation Army, and-because of his heritage and parents-several charities in the Republic of Armenia. He was a giving person of his time and energy. Dr. Attarian served in the U.S. Marine Corps reserve until 1951, and was a member of Kirkridge Presbyterian Church, in Grand Blanc, MI. Dr. Arch will be missed by so many who knew him. A memorial service will be held 11 AM Friday, May 24, 2019 at Sharp Funeral Home & Cremation Center, 6063 Fenton Rd., Flint with Rev. Glenn Grant officiating. The family will receive friends from 5 PM - 7 PM Thursday, May 23, 2019 at the funeral home. Those desiring may make memorial contributions to the charity of their choice.
