Douglas Gene Smith, known affectionately to many as “Walrus” due to his mustache and beard, passed away on Friday, March 29, 2024 at the age of 69. He was born on July 8, 1954 to parents William Andrew and Ann Marie Smith. Doug grew up in Philadelphia, where he owned his printing business for many years. He married his great love, Mona Jean Sova, on March 27th, 1982 and they eventually moved to Michigan. Together they were grandparents and aunt and uncle to many family members of all ages that loved them fiercely. Doug was sweet and caring, and his warmth and humor will be greatly missed. A quote that resonated with him was “it’s better to burn out than it is to rust,” from Neil Young, which may offer comfort to the many who miss him. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the American Kidney Fund (AKF).
Services will be announced at a later date. Arrangements by Sharp Funeral Homes, Fenton Chapel, 1000 W. Silver Lake Rd., Fenton, MI 48430. www.sharpfuneralhomes.com
