SPILLANE, Donald Edward  Age 78, life-long resident of Swartz Creek, died Wednesday, May 5, 2004 at Genesys Health Park. Services will be held 1 PM Saturday, May 8, 2004 at Sharp Funeral Homes, Miller Road Chapel, 8138 Miller Rd., Swartz Creek with Rev. J.D. Landis officiating. Interment will be held at Sunset Hills Cemetery, Flint. Visitation will be from 2-5 and 7-9 PM Thursday and Friday at the funeral home. The family sincerely requests that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made to Swartz Creek Fine Arts Association or the Swartz Creek Historical Society in memory of Dons name. Mr. Spillane was born December 15, 1925 in Swartz Creek, the son of Benjamin H. and Hattie (Kennedy) Spillane and his family was among the earliest settlers of Swartz Creek having come to the area in 1849. He was a 1943 graduate of Mary Crapo High School, Swartz Creek and was a veteran on the U.S. Marine Corps serving from 1943 to 1946. Mr. Spillane married Phyllis M. Dowell on May 19, 1951. Mr. Spillane entered the service station business in 1946 and owned and operated Spillane Standard Service Station/Apple Creek Amoco Station for 50 continuous years. It was a family business that served the community for 75 years. Mr. Spillane served on Standard Oil Dealer Advisory Council for two terms, past president and member of Swartz Creek Kiwanis Club, served on the City Charter Committee which was responsible for bringing Swartz Creek to City Status. After Swartz Creek became a city, Mr. Spillane served 12 years on the Planning Commission and 2 terms as Chairman of the Cities Compensation Committee. He was a member of the Flint Banjo Club, serving as past president and a board member. He was a founding member, past president, and board member of the Swartz Creek Fine Arts Association, member and past vice-president of the Swartz Creek Historical Society, member of the Fretted Instrument Guild of America. Surviving are: wife, Phyllis of Swartz Creek; three sons, David Spillane and wife, Lisa, Thomas Spillane and wife, Pamela, all of Swartz Creek, Michael Spillane and wife, Lyla of Vernon; seven grandchildren, Benjamin, Jeremy, Scott, Mitchell, Meagan, Ryan., Kaitlyn; one great-granddaughter, Grace. Mr. Spillane was preceded in death by: his parents; brother, Jack Spillane.
