Donald Caphton McLogan, gentleman, was born in Flint, Michigan on November 24, 1921 to Helen Austin McLogan and Edwin Carroll McLogan. He was a lifelong resident of Flint, grew up on Elwood Ave and walked to Cook Elementary. After graduating Flint Central High School in 1940 he attended Alma College and University of Michigan and was a member of Phi Kappa Psi fraternity. He felt a call of duty and enlisted in the Army Air Corp 1942. He learned to fly B25's and B26's and served state-side during the war stationed in Del Rio, Texas 1942-46. After leaving the service he married the love of his life Mary Louise Vance in Flint, Michigan 1947. They raised four daughters together and were married 32 years until Mary Lou's death December 5th, 1985. Don was a retail merchant along with his two brothers at their parents' business McLogan and Austin "The China Closet" in downtown Flint from 1946 until the store closed in 1967. He was a member of the Flint Elks Club and Rotary. He took his business skills to General Motors and was employed as a material controller until he retired in 1984. Don was a member of the American Legion Post 151 (Red Arrow) where he served as long-standing Sergeant-At-Arms. In 2004, Post 151 awarded Don a certificate of appreciation "A Proud WWII Veteran" and in 2008 awarded a 60 year certificate for "longtime and dedicated member and an outstanding contributor to the programs of the American Legion". Don loved the outdoors and was an avid deer hunter and fly fisherman. He played the piano and loved the old standards, enjoyed duplicate bridge with Mary Lou and spent many hours playing cribbage with Cousin John Steinmetz. He was passionate for all U of M sports, especially Michigan Football and relished Fall Saturdays with Bob Green and Cousin John at Michigan Stadium. He, his wife and daughters enjoyed many summers together at the family cottage on Higgins Lake. They also enjoyed traveling to San Diego to visit daughter Anne and family. Don was preceded in death by his loving wife Mary Lou, his parents and Cousin Elaine Steinmetz. Don is survived by daughters Anne Herman (Paul) of San Diego and grandson Donald; Susan Behrendt (Jeff) of Flushing granddaughters Megan Halvorson (Tom) and Melissa; Barbara Bellairs (Fred) of Grand Blanc grandsons David (Katie), Jeff and granddaughter Laura; and daughter Rebecca of Flint; brothers Ted (Bea) of Ann Arbor and Jim of Flint as well as many loving nieces and nephews. We all love you. Service will be held 11 AM Monday, April 6, 2009 at Sharp Funeral Home & Cremation Center, 6063 Fenton Rd., Flint. Interment will follow at New Calvary Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will be held 12-4 PM and 6-9 PM Sunday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, donations would be welcome for the "Poppy Fund" c/o American Legion Post 151, G-4314 W. Carpenter Road, Flint, MI 48504.
