Diane Kay Sloan, 81, passed away on Tuesday, November 29, 2022 . Diane was born in Flint Michigan to Edward E. & Dorothy M (Feddick) Groehsl on August 5, 1941.
Diane attended Mandeville High School in the Carmen-Ainsworth district and Flint Junior College. She graduated from Michigan State University in 1963 with a degree in Elementary Education. She taught 2nd grade in the Carmen Ainsworth district until starting a family. Her first husband was Fenton dentist, Dr. Darrell Boyd. She worked for many years in the library at Patterson Elementary School in Holly. After getting a Masters Degree in Special Education, she taught second grade and special Education for over 20 years at North Road Elementary, Fenton Area Public Schools, until she retired in 2008.
Diane loved books and sharing them with children. After retirement, she donated the many, many children’s books she had collected over the years to the World of Wonder Early Childhood Center in Fenton where she created and managed a beautifully decorated library, adding books donated by parents and the community. For this she was nominated for The Roy E. Peterson Caring Adult Award as someone who goes beyond the call of duty to provide services to children or youth in Genesee County.
She is survived by her daughter, Melissa I. Boyd of Fenton MI and brother George E Groehsl of Harrison MI. She is also survived by her cousin John Fain, cousin Amy (Jeffrey) Cooper, cousin John (Christine) Fain Jr., Justin & Katie Sue Cooper and by her dear and supportive friend of over 70 years Ann Walker. Diane was preceded in death by her second husband and companion, Thomas Jefferson Sloan and by her parents.
A Celebration of Diane's life is planned for the future.
