MORTON, David Carl - Age 88, of Flushing died at Genesys Regional Medical Center on Saturday, October 24 2015 after a brief illness. His life will be celebrated 1PM Thursday, October 29, 2015 at Sharp Funeral Homes, Miller Road Chapel, 8138 Miller Rd., Swartz Creek. Visitation will be held 6PM-8PM Wednesday with an American Legion Memorial Service at 7PM Wednesday. Visitation will also be 11AM until time of service at the funeral home. The second of four sons born to Dale and Oneita (Lowe) Morton, David was born in 1927 in Flint and lived most of his life in the Flushing area. David is survived by his wife of 68 years, Mary Anne, son Charles (Bonita of Leesburg, GA), and daughters Christina (Sid of Austin, TX), Barbara ( Douglas of Louisville, CO), and Denise of Flushing. David is also survived by brothers Stewart of Mount Clemens, Duane (Joyce of Ukiah, CA) and Bruce (Marcia of San Jose, CA), seven grandchildren and four great grandchildren. David proudly served in the US Navy. He enlisted in September, 1944 to serve in WWII, attended gunnery school in Norman, OK and trained to be a radio operator in Memphis, TN leading to service on an amphibious aircraft. While stationed in Corpus Christi, TX his squadron patrolled the Gulf of Mexico for German u-boats. Later he was stationed in Oahu, HI. He was reassigned to the army as a radio operator and while serving with the army he had the opportunity to shake the hand of then General Dwight D. Eisenhower. He was discharged on June 19, 1946. He worked 16 years for Grand Trunk Railroad, co-owned the Lamplighter Lounge on Robert T. Longway Boulevard in Flint for several years, and retired from real estate in 1992. David served as post commander of American Legion Post 294 in Swartz Creek. He was also a member of the Elf Khaurafeh Masonic Temple and an active member of the Flint Shrine Oriental Band. An avid sportsman, RV-traveler, vehicle restoration hobbyist, woodworker, ham radio operator, humorist and gardener, David always marched to the beat of his own drummer.
