Darrell Gene Gatlin, 71, of Flint Township, Michigan passed away on Saturday, March 4, 2023, due to cardiovascular disease. Darrell was born on Friday, June 29, 1951, in Flint, Michigan. He graduated from Grand Blanc High School in 1969. After high school he served in the US Marine Corps and later earned an associate degree from Mott Community College in Flint. During his life he worked at building trucks, building structures, and building friendships. He loved to sit and talk about anything and everything. His reading interests ran from astronomy, to automotive, to the building arts. He made lots of friends over the years and was loved by his nieces and nephews who lovingly referred to him as “UD” and by the youngers as Papa Darrell. He is survived by brothers Gary (Donna) Gatlin, and Dallas (Nola) Gatlin, and sisters Cindy (Michael) Pullara, and Janene Sholes, and many nieces and nephews, cousins, and friends, including his longtime close friend Gloria. He was preceded in death by his parents Darwin and Betty Gatlin, brother Ronald (Judy) Gatlin, sister Sheron (Stan) Coats, and brother Dennis. Cremation has taken place. A private memorial service for family and closest friends is planned for later this summer. Those wishing to express condolences and celebrate Darrell’s life are encouraged make a memorial contribution in his name to Carriage Town Ministries, 605 Garland St., Flint.
