McNiven, Daniel J., of Flint, age 94, died Wednesday, March 14, 2012, at Caretel Inns, Brighton. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11:00 am on Monday, March 19th at St. Mary Queen of the Angels Catholic Church, 4413 Morrish Rd, Swartz Creek, Fr. Dan Kogut, celebrant. Burial will follow in New Calvary Catholic Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 2-8 pm Sunday at Sharp Funeral Homes, Miller Road Chapel, 8138 Miller Rd, Swartz Creek where a rosary will be prayed 7 PM Sunday. Born July 12, 1917 in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, to George and Mary Graham McNiven. Daniel graduated from Saginaw Arthur Hill Tech, and moved to Flint to work at the News Advertiser, where he met Catherine Ann Hritz. They were married on June 15, 1940, and enjoyed 68 wonderful years together until her death in 2008. Dan is survived by five children, James (Jane) of Halifax, Nova Scotia, George (Debbie) of Sandusky, Doug (Dolores) of Edmond, OK, Kathleen (David) Pollak of Dexter, and Timothy of Columbus, OH, plus nine grandchildren and fifteen great-grandchildren, many Hritz nieces, nephews and cousins, and many Canadian cousins. Dan retired from the Flint Journal in 1977 after more than 32 years as a printer and proofreader. His undying love of education was shown by the many classes he attended at Mott Community College in his 60's & 70's. He was a founding member of St. Luke's Catholic Church, and an active member of the Knights of Columbus. He loved fishing, photography and was a great dancer, and traveled thousands of miles with Catherine. They went as far west as Hawaii and as far east as Dubai, including multiple trips to Europe and the Caribbean and all across North America. Of all the places they visited, the Manitoulin Island in Lake Huron was their favorite. The family would like to thank the staff of the Caretel Inns, Brighton and Dr. Hak and his staff in Flint for their unfailing care and professionalism.
