GAFNEY, Charles Duane "Chuck" - Age 88, of Swartz Creek, passed away Monday, July 3, 2023. Funeral Mass will be celebrated 10:00 AM Saturday, July 8, 2023 at St. Matthew Roman Catholic Church, 706 Beach St., Flint. Fr. Thomas Firestone celebrant. Burial at New Calvary Catholic Cemetery, Flint. Visitation will be held at Sharp Funeral Homes, Miller Road Chapel, 8138 Miller Road, Swartz Creek Friday from 2-4 and 6-8 PM and at church Saturday from 9 AM until the time of the Mass. A Vigil service will be held at the funeral home 7 PM Friday. In lieu of flowers, those desiring may make contributions to Special Olympics-Area 13 or St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
Chuck was born November 9, 1934 in Flint, the son of Charles Danford and Leona (Taeckens) Gafney. He was a graduate of St. Matthew Catholic High School in Flint. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy. He married Judith Ann Sheeran October 30, 1965 at St. Matthew Roman Catholic Church in Flint. Chuck was employed by the City of Flint as a cement finisher and he retired in 2000 from GM V-8 Engine Plant after 15 years of service. He had resided in the Flint area all of his life. He was a member and usher at St. Matthew Roman Catholic Church for over 50 years. He was a former member of St. Vincent DePaul and the Knights of Columbus. He also was a member of Flint Carvers. Chuck enjoyed hunting, fishing, cooking and baking.
Surviving are: his wife of 57 years, Judith; son, Patrick (Diane) Gafney of Plymouth; daughter, Jennifer (Charles) Roy of Flushing; grandchildren, Corby and Keegan Gafney and Isabella and KC Roy; siblings, Mary Ann (Bob) McElheron of Davison, John (Sue) Gafney of Dublin, OH and Sheila Gafney (Pat Peters) of Grand Blanc; special cousin, Berneda; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents and cousin, Kathy Buchalski The family wishes to extend special thanks to the staff at Maplewood Manor especially, Barb and Kim and the staff at McLaren Hospice especially, Sara and Tami. Tributes may be shared at www.sharpfuneralhomes.com.
