Channing Drake Smith

SMITH, Channing Drake  Age 85, of Swartz Creek, died Wednesday, September 17, 2003 at Heritage Manor. Services will be held 12 Noon, Tuesday, September 23, 2003 at Sharp Funeral Homes, Miller Road Chapel, 8138 Miller Rd., Swartz Creek, with military honors under the auspices of V.F.W. Curtis Wolverton Post 3243. The family will receive friends from 10 AM until 12 Noon Tuesday at the funeral home. Those desiring may make memorial contributions to American Diabetes Association. Mr. Smith was born June 4, 1918 in Mendon, MA, the son of Harold Roscoe and Alice Veronica Smith. He was a graduate of Flint Central High School and was a veteran of the U.S. Navy serving during World War II. He married Mary Jean Maples on September 28, 1940 in Flint. Mr. Smith had resided in Flint for many years and Swartz Creek since 2000. He retired from Buick as a supervisor in 1974 after 38 years of service. Mr. Smith was a member of the G.M. Executives Club, Royal Quarter Couples Club, former Mason and enjoyed square dancing for many years. Surviving are: wife, Mary of Cadillac; daughter, Cynthia and husband, Philip Gebhardt of Cadillac; son, David Smith and wife, Suzanne of Swartz Creek; three grandchildren, Timothy Toporek and wife, Kimberly, Anthony Toporek and wife, Angelique, Michelle L. Smith; three great-grandchildren, Jessica, Joseph and McKenna Toporek; many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by: his parents; son, Anthony Smith in 1964; one brother; one sister.
