Carolyn Elizabeth Vaughn - age 84, passed away on Friday, November 4, 2022. Loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother lost her long-fought battle with Alzheimer’s disease. Carolyn passed in the early morning hours at home surrounded by family. Carolyn was also known as Nonnie to countless people that knew her.
Carolyn was preceded in death by her father and mother, Zeke Tidwell and Olga Creel, her younger sister Patricia Phillips, and her dear son Phillip Walker. Carolyn is survived by her loving husband of 59 years, Thomas Vaughn, daughter and son-in-law, Patricia (Sean) Simmons, grandchildren, Phillip & Lindsey Simmons, Alexandra Simmons, great-grandchildren Rex and Sidney Simmons. Carolyn will be missed by several nieces, nephews, brothers and sisters in-law, and many longtime friends.
Carolyn and her husband Tommy, were both born and raised in Oneonta, Alabama, and moved to Flint during the heighten expansion of General Motors. It was during that time; Carolyn pursued her dream of becoming a nurse. With a passion for nursing, Carolyn found a deeper interest in Psychiatric Nursing, with a bigger passion for treating those with depression and substance abuse complications. Carolyn would go on to retire from Hurley Medical Center after earning many awards and recognition for her work. Carolyn’s next found passion would be teaching others the nursing profession she loved so dearly, later retiring from Mott Community College. Carolyn would also work many years at Insight Recovery Center and Colombiere Treatment Center which she was instrumental in getting the facility opened for treatment. Equal to her passion for nursing was her love of friends and family. With boundless energy she loved attending concerts, shopping, theater, astrology, country music, reading science fiction, gardening, meeting girlfriends for tea, and countless activities with her grandchildren. She was often seen chauffeuring kids to school activities and wherever they wanted to go.
