NEWELL, Carl D. "Red and Cotton" - Age 87, of Linden, passed away peacefully Thursday, December 9, 2010 at his residence. Funeral services will be held 11:00 AM Wednesday, December 15, 2010 at Sharp Funeral Homes, Linden Chapel, 209 E. Broad St, Linden, with Pastor Donald Neuville officiating. Visitation will be held at the funeral home Tuesday from 4-9 PM. A Masonic service will be held 7:00 PM Tuesday at the funeral home. Those desiring may make contributions to the Shriners Hospitals for Children. Carl was born October 13, 1923 in Craighead County, AR, the son of George W. and Ethel T. (Mathis) Newell. He married Charlcie "Pat" Jones February 23, 1946 in Arkansas. He retired from GM Plant 2 after 24 years of service. Carl was a member of the Linden Masonic Lodge #132 F.&A.M., the Shrine, Linden Presbyterian Church, United Way, Great Northern Raccoon Club, president of the Linden United Way, Salvation Army, Children's Diabetes, March of Dimes, coached Little League in Linden and helped get it sanctioned, sold newspapers for the Shriners, he assisted in raising money after the Jonesboro school shooting and was currently working to raise money for Shriners Burn Hospital. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening and he trained his own Blue Tick dogs for hunting raccoons and bear up north. Surviving are: wife, Charlcie "Pat"; 2 sons, Larry Newell of Argentine and Nelse Newell of Linden; 7 grandchildren, Stacie and husband Chris Ward, Amanda Miller, Donald Miller III, Nickolas and wife Linda Newell, Heather Newell, Cody Newell and Tyler Newell; 2 great grandchildren, Brent Roberts and Megan Roberts; 1 great-great granddaughter, Nika Marie Hurd.
