Maletic, Carl Patrick 3/17/47 - 11/23/2021 Sacramento, CA. Carl Maletic, beloved youngest brother and favorite uncle was born in Flint, Michigan. Carl was the tenth of ten children born to John and Mary (Gracan) Maletic. His father, a Croatian immigrant and his mother 1st generation moved to Flint, MI from Pittsburgh, PA to raise their growing family. Carl had a wonderful childhood, growing up in a small but happy home full of his siblings across the street from Flint's Bishop Airport. Carl was drafted in 1966 and served in the US Army stateside until 1968. Carl then attended the University of Detroit Mercy from 1969-1975 and received his degree in Architecture. In 1976 Carl moved from Michigan to San Francisco, CA to work with the bridge building firm of TY Lin Intl. for 13 years. He then formed a partnership with his mentor and friend Vernon DeMars, the former Dean of the School of Architecture, U.C. Berkeley as DeMars & Maletic for over 15 years. During that time, they developed urban design solutions for the San Francisco Waterfront, which included re-design of the Ferry Building, a new Ferry Building Plaza, and development of various pier projects on the Northeast waterfront as well as the retrofit of the century-old Ferry Building clock tower, often in association with Patri-Merker Architects, San Francisco. Carl joined the firm URS / Berger Joint Venture in 2012 for a deployment at Kandahar Airfield (KAF), Afghanistan as an Architect /Structural Engineer/Master Planner. He was embedded with U.S. Air Force to plan, design, and engineer various FOBs throughout Afghanistan including as lead engineer for the structural analysis of a catastrophic roof collapse at Marine base Camp Leatherneck in Helmand Province and assisting the U.S. Marines with the design and re-deployment of facility assets from numerous outlying FOB’s during the drawdown of NATO forces from Afghanistan. In 2013 Carl returned to Sacramento County to work on various architectural and engineering projects. “Uncle Carl” was an artist, a poet and a great historian, especially when it came to Detroit of the 1960s or Sacramento or San Francisco architecture. Carl was preceded in death by parents, John and Mary (Gracan) Maletic, brother Walter Maletic, brother James Maletic, sister Helen Maletic Grzeck and brother Thomas Maletic. He was also preceded in death by nephew and close friend, Jeffrey Hampson (Lucinda) of Morongo Valley, CA., as they were close in age. Carl is survived by his sister, Mildred Maletic Hampson of Petoskey, MI; sister Dorothy Maletic Morrish of Clio, MI; sister Elizabeth Maletic Roberts (Bill) of Swartz Creek, MI; brother John Maletic (Alice) of Fenton, MI; brother Robert Maletic (Marla) of Irving, TX; former wife Kathleen Kennedy; and longtime friend Gaynelle Craig of Antelope, CA. Carl will be missed by niece Karen Roberts of Dexter, MI, formerly San Francisco and more than 25 loving nieces, nephews and grand nieces and nephews.
