CARLSON, Carl Herman - age 95, of Swartz Creek, passed away at his residence and departed to the Lord April 16, 2023 surrounded by numerous family members. A memorial service will be held 11 AM Sunday, April 23, 2023 at Sharp Funeral Homes, Miller Road Chapel, 8138 Miller Rd., Swartz Creek, MI 48473. The family will receive friends from 3-7 PM Saturday and 10 AM - 11 AM Sunday at the funeral home. Born on January 30th, 1928 in Detroit, Michigan to Ossian and Anna Carlson. Carl graduated from Cass Tech High School in Detroit then upon graduation, enlisted in the Navy for pilot training during World War II. At the end of the war, he attended Wayne State University where he earned his bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering. Carl then continued his education by earning his Master’s Degree in Civil Engineering at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. Upon his graduation, Carl enlisted in the Air Force, during the Korean War serving as a Lieutenant till the end of the War in 1953. Carl H. Carlson married his true love, Virginia L. Berg May 3rd, 1952 in Detroit, Michigan. Upon discharge from the Air Force, Carl worked in the Civil Engineering field for various firms and then moved to Genesee County in 1955 to work on a new development in the Swartz Creek area. In 1957, Carl acquired Flint Surveying & Engineering Company, that is still operating today by one of his sons. Carl also served as a public official after being elected County Surveyor for Genesee County from 1958 till 2005 (47 years of public service). In addition to being a professional land surveyor and professional engineer, Carl was an innovative entrepreneur who successfully completed residential/commercial projects in partnership with numerous developers, and family members. Carl was a dedicated husband, father, mentor, and confidant. His steadfast, consistent and calm demeanor will forever be remembered and will serve as a guiding light for those he left behind. Carl was a giver who helped to ensure his progeny had every opportunity to not only survive, but to thrive. Carl was proud of his Swedish heritage and beloved by his immediate family, his Scandinavian friends (at the Vasa Country Club of Lapeer and Viking Lodge No. 730), and acquaintances. Carl and Virginia have 4 sons in which they were so very proud and loved unconditionally. Carl & Virginia pass their legacy on through their sons Curt Carlson (Dawn), Kim Carlson (Nicole), Duane Carlson (Carolyn) and Clint Carlson (Patricia). Carl and Virginia are survived by their 10 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren; Grandchildren Christopher Carlson, Cara (Carlson) & Steve Kuester, Joshua & Amanda (York) Carlson, Stephen Carlson, Denise Carlson, Laura Carlson, Madison Anna Carlson, Skylar Virginia Carlson, Mitchell Ross Carlson, Nicholas Carl Carlson. Great grandchildren Olivia Kuester, Isaac Kuester, Luke Kuester, Charlotte Kuester, Caleb Carlson and Callie Carlson. Carl was preceded in death by his wife Virginia, brother Ralph, sister Beverly, daughter in law Dawn (Boatwright), In lieu of flowers, contributions or donations can be made to the Vasa County Club bridge rehabilitation project in honor of his name at: VCCCA Treasurer C/O John Broman 20000 W.
