MITCHELL, Bruce G. - Age 81, of Swartz Creek, died Saturday, August 29, 2009 at Genesys Hospice Care Center, Goodrich. Funeral service will be held 11:00 AM Wednesday, September 2, 2009 at Sharp Funeral Homes, Miller Road Chapel, 8138 Miller Road, Swartz Creek, with Pastor Hal Phillips officiating. Burial immediately following at Fairview Cemetery, Linden. Visitation will be held at the funeral home Monday from 6-8 PM and Tuesday from 1-4 and 6-8 PM. Those desiring may make contributions to the Mundy United Methodist Church or McLaren Pulmonary Rehabilitation Center. Bruce was born May 14, 1928 in Mundy Township on the family farm to Thomas W. and Edessa (Larobardiere) Mitchell. He married Barbara Thomas on June 10, 1950 in Holly, MI. Bruce was a member of South Mundy United Methodist Church in Mundy Township. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science and Master of Science Degrees from Michigan State University. Bruce taught agriculture in Ida, Michigan for three years before moving to Holly, MI to teach seven more years. He was an administrator for the remainder of his career retiring in 1986 from Holly. In 1989 he was interim Assistant Superintendent for Sparta Public Schools. After retirement he was on Mundy Township Zoning Board for 15 years, was a charter member of Rankin Lions Club, and was active in his church. He was also a member of the P.O.E.T.S. Club and graduated as a Master Gardener, as he enjoyed gardening very much. His hobbies were many: woodworking, pottery, painting, and golf. These things were very enjoyable to him as were traveling with friends and family. Surviving are his wife, Barbara, and their four children and spouses: Brian and Alberta Yelland Mitchell of Swartz Creek, Beth and Greg Murray of Fenton, Bonnie and Joseph Pike of Swartz Creek, and Bradley and Molly Mears Mitchell of Brockport, New York. Grandchildren, Shawn and Tina Cousins O'Brien and their children Zachary, Lauren and Lillian, Aaron and Jennifer Jensen O'Brien and their daughter Jensen of Swartz Creek, Kiley O'Brien Judge and Brandon Judge of Grand Blanc, Geoff Murray of Bloomfield Hills, Matthew and Cathy Jackson Mitchell of Fenton, Tyler Mitchell of Holly, Weston Mitchell of Kalamazoo, Emilee Pike of Grand Rapids, and Holly Pike Crabtree-Ylitalo and Clyde Ylitalo and four children Hope Crabtree, Ruth Crabtree, Corey Ylitalo and Allison Ylitalo of Linden, Michael Mitchell and William Mitchell of Brockport, New York. Also surviving are sister, Hope Nelson of St. Charles, Michigan, brother and sister-in-law Bill and Livy Thomas of Troy, Michigan, John Thomas of Troy, Ohio, Robert Thomas of Fruitland Park, Florida, Margaret Thomas of Waterford, Michigan and many nieces and nephews.
