Betty Shellenbarger

October 17, 1937 — October 27, 2018

SHELLENBARGER, Betty Lou - Age 81, of Hale, died Saturday, October 27, 2018. Cremation has taken place and no services will be held. Betty was born October 17, 1937 in Columbiaville, the daughter of George and Leola (Lawrence) Gee. She married Arnold Shellenbarger November 12, 1955. Betty, wife, mom and grandma was an incredible lady and her presence in this world made an impact on many of us. It's hard to describe a woman that was so strong, sincere and deeply authentic. Inscribed in her DNA was perseverance and family values. Her level of intelligence far exceeded a college degree and any person that challenged her in a sophisticated conversation found out the hard way. There wasn't a day in our life, that the easy answer was to call mom for help about daily issues to sports, hunting, fishing or even correcting our grammar. Mom was never wrong. From her own business of alteration/sewing, District Supervisor for BCBS, to owning and cooking at her own Drive In Restaurant in Alanson with food that made your mouth water every time you drove by it, she could do anything. The only thing that slowed her down was dad and us boys. She served on the Inland Lakes School Board as President in the 70's, served on the vestry at the Episcopal Church, served as Chairman of the Absentee Voter Election Board in Tuscarora Township for years, and co-founded the Indian River Food Co-operative for area citizens. She shot her first buck when she was 14 and could cast a fly-rod with the pros. Her cooking from scratch into incredible meals was an art that you don't see or taste anymore. Surviving are: her husband of 62 years, Arnold; sons, Scott and wife Ann Shellenbarger of Goodrich, Aaron Shellenbarger and Shirley Horrisberger of Grand Rapids, and Jim and wife Sue LeJeune of Alanson; grandchildren, Reilly, Austin, Trevor, and Kayla; sister, Ginger and husband Melvin Wilson of Florida; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; and sisters, Deloras Burgess and Jo Potter. Tribute may be shared at www.sharpfuneralhomes.com.
