Betty Gordon

GORDON, Betty Bernard Indianer - age 90, of Raleigh/Durham, NC, passed away on January 19, 2021. She was not alone or suffering. Betty was born in Flint, MI on October 3, 1930, daughter of Joseph and Irene (Lepler) Bernard. She graduated from Flint Northern High School in 1948. She attended Drake University in Des Moines and Flint Junior College before attending and graduating with Distinction from the University of Michigan-Flint in January of 1974. Betty was married to Dr. Simon S. Indianer on June 14, 1948; they were married 31 years sharing many adventures, playing many rounds of golf, and raising 3 children before Si passed in October of 1979. She moved to Pompano Beach FL in 1981 where she met and married Henry L. Gordon on June 27, 1982; they were married 19 years and she gained Hank's love of boating, even becoming a member of the Coast Guard Auxiliary before Hank passed in February of 2001. Betty was involved with many activities and usually rose to the top because of her charm and organizational skills. She had a great passion for volunteer work and was a great supporter of Jewish causes of all types. She became either Treasurer or President of most organizations she was involved with. She served for many years as the president of the Hospital Auxiliary at Flint Osteopathic Hospital. Betty was president of Willowood Country Club in Flint in the late 1950s-1960s and later the Pompano Beach Women's Golf Association for several years in Florida. She was an adult leader for the BBYO for a few years in the mid-60s. She helped run the Gift Shop at Congregation Beth Israel for several years. She was an excellent and passionate fundraiser for the UJA Flint chapter. In 1980, she was sent to Israel by the organization because of her excellent fundraising skills. She made friends with a couple of the men on the trip, and one of them set her up to meet the man she would eventually remarry, Hank. Betty was an avid traveler throughout the world. She was an excellent golfer and won many league championships. She also loved playing poker and had an excellent hand at Blackjack. Betty also loved Mahjong and Canasta. Betty is survived by her loving children Michelle, Lee, and Sandy (Kevin), her adoring grandchildren Sara (Jared), Nick(Alima), Simone, Gabriel, Sara(Rob), and Kyle(Crystal), and great-grandchildren Simon, Xander, Duncan, Julian, Luna, Wolfie, Vera, and Seth. Betty also leaves many loving nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. She loved her family and friends and instilled in her children how important it is to do the right thing. Betty is preceded in death by her 2 husbands as well as her companion Jim Fink. She is also preceded by her 2 brothers Dr. Seymour Alan (Ted) Bernard, and Dr. William Melvin (Bill) Bernard. The family of Betty Gordon wishes to thank the staff at WakeMed Cary who cared for her so well in her last days. There will be a private service on Friday, January 22, 2021. The funeral service will be held at Machpelah Cemetery in Flint, MI. Leonard Meizlish of Congregation Beth Israel in Flint will be officiating. Burial will follow the funeral at Machpelah Cemetery. We look forward to a time when we can celebrate her life together. Funeral arrangements are being handled by Sharp Funeral Homes, Miller Road Chapel, 8138 Miller Rd., Swartz Creek.
