DATE, Betty Leona, age 89, of Swartz Creek, passed away Sunday October 7, 2012 at Lapeer County Extended Care Facility. A celebration of life service will be held 1:00PM Wednesday, October 10, 2012 at Sharp Funeral Homes, Miller Road Chapel, 8138 Miller Road, Swartz Creek. Pastor Gloria Watson officiating. Cremation has taken place, interment at White Chapel Cemetery, Troy at a later date. The family will receive friends on Wednesday 10:00am until time of service. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the Genesee County Humane Society or to the Alzheimer's Association. Betty was born on February 27, 1923 in Royal Oak, Michigan, one of twin daughters to Leon and Marjorie (Burgess) Groves. She attended Royal Oak High School, and after graduation, she married R. Clifford Date on June 6, 1942. He preceded her in death August 27, 2006. They made their home in flint until moving in 1986 when they moved to Swartz Creek. Betty was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church From 1957 until the closing of the church in 2006. She loved her daughters and grandchildren and spent many happy hours with them. For many years she co-owned the Grand Blanc franchise of H&R Block, and continued to process income taxes until 2005 when she retired. Betty's love of reading kept her busy after her retirement. Left to cherish her memory are her two daughters; Gail Smith of Grand Blanc and Nancy Malinowski of Swartz Creek; grandchildren, James (Lisa) Smith, Jon Smith both of Flint, Kyle Belanger of Kalamazoo, and Elizabeth Belanger of Swartz Creek; great grandchildren Jessica Clark and Colton Smith; great great grandaughter Kaydence Smith. She was also preceded in death by her parents, twin sister Jean Rusnek and grandson Joel Smith. The family wishes to extend a heartfelt thank-you to the staff of 1 North at Lapeer Extended Care Facility for the loving and excellent care given to Betty.
