Betty gained extra skills, and the extra certifications (Reading Recovery, Learning Disorders) necessary to help students with higher needs. Her Bachelor of Elementary Education was earned with honors while she graduated Cum Laude with a Masters of Art in Teaching with a major in Learning and Behavior Disorders. She often took on additional responsibilities working with staff, such as North Central Association Chair, and working summers in programs designed to help students become better readers. When she wasn't working she could be found with her husband Doug on the clay courts of the Flint Tennis Club where they both served as board members, or on the courts of Verona Walk playing with different teams and groups. They also enjoyed together traveling, biking, and running at local road races, including their favorite, the Crim. Betty enjoyed activities with fellow retired Mt. Morris teachers, especially the Bunco group. Betty's greatest love was family. She cherished her grandchildren, children, siblings, and parents. She was committed to her family and enjoyed gatherings for birthdays, holidays, reunions, weddings, more recently retirements, and any other occasion. She was preceded in death by her father and mother, Smith and Charlotte Lewis, and brother-in-law Don Duby.
