Bertha May Slocum

May 9, 1913 — July 22, 2004

SLOCUM, Bertha May  Age 91, of Gaines, died Thursday, July 22, 2004 at her residence. Services will be held 1 PM Monday, July 26, 2004 at Sharp Funeral Homes, Miller Road Chapel, 8138 Miller Rd., Swartz Creek. Interment will be held at Oakwood Cemetery, Gaines. Visitation will be from 5-9 PM Saturday and 2-5 and 7-9 PM Sunday at the funeral home. Those desiring may make memorial contributions to American Caner Society or the Alzheimers Association. Mrs. Slocum was born May 9, 1913 in Beaverton, MI, the daughter of Marvin and Roseltha (Wright) Wilson. She married Guy Harold Slocum on February 24, 1934 in Flint and he preceded her in death on September 3, 1986. She had been employed at the Fair Store in the South Flint Plaza and Eastland Mall and was employed by Doris Garrison Travel Bureau. Mrs. Slocum also worked at the Linden Market for many years. Mrs. Slocum was a 4 H leader for 20 years, she was on the committee that organized the building of the Swartz Creek Senior Center and was a very active member, and she was a senior volunteer at Mary Crapo School in Swartz Creek for five years. Surviving are: two daughters, Grace and husband, Kenneth Bennett, Patricia and husband, Gilbert Wykes, all of Gaines; six grandchildren, Michael Bennett and wife, Nancy, David Bennett and wife, Andrea, Annette and husband, Fred Casciano, Mark Wykes and wife, Michele, Scott Wykes and wife, Barbara, Guy Wykes and wife, Michelle; eight great-grandchildren, Cal and Carley Wykes, Nicole Wykes, Kristina and Jeffery Bennett, Michael, Matthew and Mary Alicia Wykes; sister, Beatrice Struble of Petoskey; step-sister, Bernetta Nagy; brother-in-law, Norman Shack of Onaway; sister-in-law, Vera Wilson; several nieces and nephews; special caregiver, Brenda Angell; faithful companion, Sam the cat. She was also preceded in death by: her parents; son, Marvin Albert Slocum; brother, James Wilson; sister, Hazel Shack.
