SWERDAN, Basil W. - age 84, of Roscommon, formerly of Flint, died Friday, February 29, 2008. Services will be held 1 PM Wednesday, March 5, 2008 at Sharp Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 6063 Fenton Rd., Flint. Interment will follow at Sunset Hills Cemetery, Flint. Visitation will be held 2-8 PM Tuesday at the funeral home where a 7 PM Tuesday Masonic memorial will be held under the auspices of Flushing Lodge #223 F & AM. Visitation will also be held 11 AM until the time of service Wednesday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers those desiring may make memorial contributions to Heartland Hospice of West Branch. Basil was born September 24, 1923 in Portage, PA, the son of John and Mary (Malenich) Swerdan. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving during World War II in Field Artillery. Basil married Verna Herkel on August 23, 1947. He retired from Buick in 1977 after 34 years of service as a Tool Maker. Basil very active in Flushing Lodge #223 F & AM, American Legion Post 64 and was instrumental in many other Veteran organizations. He worked with the Boy Scouts for 20 years and served as the Chairman of the Advisory Board for Security Federal Credit Union. Left to cherish his memory are: wife of 60 years, Verna; two sons, Barry Swerdan and Robin of Hubbard Lake, Randy Swerdan and wife, Denise of Houghton Lake; daughter, Lori Swerdan and Tom of Flint; seven grandchildren; 5 great-grandchildren with one on the way; two sisters, Julia Wilson of CA, Lillian Belcastro of NJ; brother, Pete Swerdan and wife, Dolly of Flint.
