August Orvis

August "Sam" Orvis,  --  age 89 of Swartz Creek, formerly of Flushing, passed away peacefully at his home with his family by his side on March 5, 2023.  Visitation will be held at 2PM on Sunday, (the family hour will be at 1 PM) March 19 where a Celebration of Sam's Life service will be at 4:00 PM  at the Sharp Funeral Homes, Miller Road Chapel, 8138 Miller Road, Swartz Creek.   Visitation will be 2:00 PM Sunday  until the time of service at 4:00 PM. In lieu of flowers please consider donating to the Michigan Humane Society.

Sam was born on November 1, 1933, in Charlevoix, Michigan to the late Vaughn  and Lydia (Halverson) Orvis.  He loved to fish, play euchre with his family, cook, work on puzzles, read, hunt, planting, gardening and especially spending time with his family at the Ironton House on Lake Charlevoix.

He is survived by his wife, Irene Orvis; daughter Tamara (Dane) Whitley of Boyne City and their children, Lindsay Whitley, Ashley (Joseph) Carpenter, and Elias Whitley; son Darwin "Skip" (Michelle) Orvis of Clio and their children Nicole and Nathan Orvis; daughter, Sami Keely of Mt. Morris and her daughters Samantha (Almon) Perry and Shyanne Orvis.  Stepdaughters Tammy (Rusty) Williams of Gaines and their children Matt (Michelle) Steller, Mike (Liane) Steller, Russell (Ashley) Williams; Tonya (Ron) Scott of Gaines and their children Ashley and Sydney, and nephew Eli. Nephew David (Francine) Orvis of Longmont, CO and niece Lynn Hall of Cheboygan, MI.

Sam was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Mary Hills and Audrey Russell;  niece, Jeannie Williams; nephew,  Herb Orvis and grandson, Zachary Whitley.

Irene, Tammy and Tonya would like to express their gratitude to all the Hospice Nurses who helped so much during this difficult time.  They were Pops 's angels.
