HOWE, Alan Dean - age 82 of Swartz Creek, died February 4, 2023. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held at a later date. Dean was born September 25, 1940, in Peoria, IL, the son of Lowell Dean and Myrne Marie (Smith) Howe. He was employed by the Flint Journal for 41 years as a sportswriter and columnist. Dean covered the gamut of sports, from high school to college to the pros. He saw all of Ervin "Magic" Johnson's games at Michigan State. He's been to the World Series with the Detroit Tigers. He followed the Detroit "Bad Boys" Pistons for seven years and saw them win back-to-back NBA Championships. He loved the Buick Open and writing columns about Tiger Woods and many others. Dean has seen two Rose Bowls and followed Michigan's 1997 Championship team. Dean leaves to treasure: son, Matthew Howe and wife, Gina Messa of Portland, OR; twin brother, Don Howe and wife, Alice of St. Ignace, MI; three sisters, Maurine Mattingly and Jean Corwin of Mesa, AZ and Judith Clark of Wisconsin; special friend, Diane Palmer and her daughters, Marilyn and Zoe.
