Bill was born November 24, 1932 in Flint, Michigan, the son of Donald E. and Tressa E. (Snyder) Sloan. He was raised by his beloved grandparents and spent all of his summers on Byram Lake in Linden. After graduating from Flint Technological High School in 1951, he enlisted in the Air Force and served during the Korean War. He married Joan Vaughan in 1953 in Wichita Falls, Texas and they were married for 53 years. They returned to Michigan after the war and raised their 5 children, enjoying life on Byram Lake to the fullest. Bill was employed by Vernors, Inc. for 20 years, working as regional branch manager. Later, he was self-employed and owned and operated several businesses in the Flint and Fenton area. Joan was a full partner in all business ventures. After their children left home, Joan and Bill restored an old bus into a comfortable motor home and spent many years traveling the country to visit family and explore national parks. They had great adventures on their many trips with friends to snowmobile in the mountains of Wyoming and the U.P. and Canada. Traveling, reading, boating, and playing Runs and Sets with family were his favorite ways to spend time. He was very handy, an excellent mechanic and could fix anything, from his truck, to his boats, or a sewing machine. We will miss his stories, his calm presence, genuine smile and big laugh.
Bill is survived by his five children, Vicky Sloan of northern New York, Bob Sloan of Linden, Barbara (Todd) Guenther of Lander, Wyoming, Kim (Keith) Carnes of Haslett, Christine Sloan of Fairborn, Ohio; his 10 grandchildren, Christopher, Matthew, Erik, Kyle, Erin, Jeremiah, Shawn, Nate, Larkin, and Kelly; 8 great grandchildren, Lukas, Finan, Alexandra, Silas, Josiah, Aidan, Rye, and Willa; brothers-in-law, Bob (Margie) Vaughan of New Mexico and Tom Vaughan of Colorado; nieces, Danielle, Barbie, and Julie.
He was preceded in death by his wife, his grandparents, William and Louise Snyder, his in-laws, Ted and Nonie Vaughan and his parents. Tributes may be shared at www.sharpfuneralhomes.com.
